Canadian Line Materials (CLM for short) was a relatively large electrical manufacturer from the mid 1920s to the mid 1980s when they shut down. The main focus here is what they are known best for, Civil Defence air raid sirens. In the late 1930s, Canadian Line Materials signed a contract with the Canadian Government to produce Civil Defense air raid sirens to warn people of an enemy attack on canada. Several models of sirens were produced from the late 1930s to the mid 1960s. The early Canadian Line Material sirens were used during WWII in case an enemy decided to launch an attack on Canada. After WWII ended, the Cold War started shortly after so the sirens became Cold War nuclear attack sirens. Canadian Line Materials had a variety of sirens ranging from 3 H.P. all the way to 7.5 H.P. Most of the sirens Canadian Line Materials made were omnidirectional but Canadian Line Materials also made two rotating models in the later 1950s. The rotating CLMs had the model numbers 92729DP(550 volt 3 phase) and 92730DP(220 volt 3 phase).The omnidirectional sirens had the model numbers 92763CP(10/12 Vertical 3 H.P. model),5261(10/12 single phase 5 H.P. horizontal model),5263(10/12 3 phase 5 H.P. horizontal model), and 5223(20/24 3 phase 7.5 H.P. horizontal). These sirens were installed all across Canada along with a few other companies including Biersach & Niedermeyer (BNCO) and Federal Sign and Signal (FS&S).
